The mysterious fate of Samuel Collier-3

What ever happened to Samuel Collier-3?

The "oral tradition" in the family is captured in the following excerpt from a letter written by my Aunt May to a cousin dated April 25, 1984:

"...Grandpa's father
[Samuel Collier-3] came over to Windsor, Canada first, he was going to send for the rest of the family when he had saved the money. Before he could send for them he died.

After Uncle Harold and I were married we took Grandma
[Anna Korda-2] & Grandpa [Samuel Collier-2] over to Windsor to look for the cemetary. Things had changed so much Grandpa couldn't find it..."

To date I have found no trace of Samuel Collier-3 in the Canadian Censuses, nor have I had any luck in finding a death record in Ontario for him. He does not appear in the English census for 1890 or 1900 with his wife Ellen Taylor-3 or his two sons either. This does not completely exclude the possibility that he was in England working away from the family after the birth of his second son, Samuel.

In the marriage record for Samuel Collier-2 and Lilian Winifred Marsden-2 of 27 June 1908, the father of the groom is given as a deceased stone quarryman Samuel Collier.

Bottom line

Time of Samuel Collier-3's death: sometime between Samuel Collier-2's birth (6 Dec 1888) and the latter's first marriage (27 June 1908).

Place of Samuel Collier-3's death: Canada seems pretty certain, the city of Windsor is what Samuel Collier-2 claimed, but it is worth noting that there is indeed a Windsor in Nova Scotia that would have been close to where other members of the Collier family were to have migrated.

High priority to find Samuel Collier-3's death record in Canada!

1952 Three Amigos, Two Bottles and One Baby

1952 Tijuana
Girls just want to have fun!

Irwin Collier-0 is the baby. Antoinette Bober-1 is wearing the "Mexico" hat. Pearl Grendziak-2 appears to be the one wearing the "On My Ass" hat. Not sure whether the woman sporting the "Pancho" hat is Mary Grendziak-2 or Helen Grendziak-2, Pearl's sisters closest in age to her.

No animals were hurt in the making of this photograph.

A Note on the Blog Structure

Blog Structure

I think of this blog as a journal that I am keeping as I proceed document by document through the genealogical record of my parents, Irwin Collier-1 and Antoinette Bober-1.

Generally I try to put a document (e.g. a census record) in one and only one posting, linking back to the original posting when needed.

With the image of a family tree in which my Generation-0 is the trunk in mind, I am proceeding from left to right for each generation, first the Collier branches and then the Bober branches. At the time of this particular posting, I am at the level of Generation-2, i.e. my grandparents, from left to right: Samuel Collier-2, Anna Korda-2, Felix Bober-2, and Pearl Grendziak-2.

After I add a few more postings to complete Pearl Grendziak-2 (for now), I will turn to Generation-3, my great-grandparents: Samuel Collier-3, Ellen Taylor-3, Anton Korda-3, Susan Czech-3, Franz Bober-3 etc.

Summary:

  • Each posting is dedicated to a single historical document.

  • I attempt to keep postings for a particular individual in a consecutive historical sequence (trick: click on the individual's label at the bottom of a posting to make sure you have all postings in which that individual's name is included)

  • The blog proceeds from the bottom of the family tree to the top, a generation at a time and from the Collier-Korda to the Bober-Grendziak branches of the family within each generation.
